FREE YOURSELF FROM YOURSELF
Well now in a few short weeks I will be watching my all time favorite band TOOL. This my friends, is a major event for me. I have seen Tool seven times before and it never gets old. I know every song they have ever made. I understand their music. I get goosebumps when I see them live. For many of you out there this doesn’t mean anything. I understand it. I get it. Many people do not associate music with their lives. A good majority of people listen to whatever the corporate labels throw at you. Now of course there are some good things that come out of this, but for the most part it is all CRAP!
For me…Music is the key to a persons soul! Ask yourself the following questions: (my answers are in red)
What band/singer/song inspires you? TOOL/A Perfect Circle/Puscifer – All led by Maynard James Keenan. Its not only that they are all led by MJK, but their music along with their lyrics leads me to think about life, my purpose, my surroundings, the people that I interact with. It makes me think about life in general. It’s a thinking mans music. Tool especially inspires me to think about the world. To think about human interaction and those that I come in contact with. Does music inspire you that way? If not it really should!
What is it that you get out of the music you listen to? I get a feeling. An emotion. A purpose. I interpret what the artist is trying to convey and mold it into my own thought and purpose. I apply the music and the lyrics to my life . Without music and the bands that I listen to there would be no Chad Hoos. It’s really that simple. As I said before, for me, music is the key to a person soul. Music will define who you are…….
Time heals, time congeals around us
Endless hours of wasted moments
Understanding, not demanding
What would you do WITHOUT music? I would be completely lost without my music. From Tool to Pink Floyd to Tiesto to Five Finger Death Punch to Phil Collins to Eminem to Jason Aldean to Pistol Annies to A Perfect Circle… the list goes on.. All of those mentioned have had some sort of impact on me. Music does that to me. To some music is just entertainment. To others, like me, music is what keeps me going. Music is my fuel.
If you could only listen to three albums the rest of your life what would they be?
Pink Floyd – The Wall – Do I really even need to explain this one? Waters…Gilmour…. Comfortably Numb…..need I say more?
Tool – Undertow – Danny Carey…MJK….Sober..Prison Sex…Crawl… The vulnerability in the lyrics….just listen you will see….
Tool – 10,000 Days – Wings of Marie 1 and 2 … the love a son has for his mother and then loses her….heartbreaking….and yet warming to the heart at the same time….
In the end music is always a personal choice. Perhaps many of you just don’t understand my love of TOOL. Then again I will not understand your love of Justin Bieber. We all have our likes when it comes to music. Myself, I choose music that makes an impact in my life. Some choose music that just entertains them because it has a good beat. (Well I’ve got a good beat and its my boot up against your head for listening to Justin Bieber…lol)
That is ok. After all music is put out there to entertain. Personally, I look at it as an extension of my personality. If you listen to the music I listen to then you will get a grasp on who I am and what I am about.
As for my infatuation with Tool….Well the lyrics..the music…the band members just talk to me….It’s thinking mans music. The drums..the guitars…the bass…all of it talks to me….(And NO I am not stoned..I am not high…I am not smoking weed….this is just me being real!)
In the end I leave you all with this. Whatever music you listen to…make it your own.
Believe in it.
Live it.
Understand it.
Grasp it.
Love it.
Be it.
And lastly I leave the following lyrics to make all of you think:
So if I could I’d wish it all away.
If I thought tomorrow would take you away.
You’re my peace of mind, my home, my center.
I’m just trying to hold on,
One more day.
Until Next Time,
Spiral Out
I think it makes sense we were beating on drums long before we were talking to one another. Pink Floyd speaks to all of mankind it’s a universal language as much as we make a mess of the world our primitive beginnings will always hold true. Tiesto would have blown the cave men away for sure!
I am so with you on this one Chad! If I didn’t have music in my life, I wouldn’t have gotten through some of my dark times lately!! I do like some of Tool’s music but they just scare me!! What Tool is for you U2 is for me plus a side of early 80’s music! Like John Mellencamp and Bruuuuuuuuce!!
