“Throughout human history, as our species has faced the frightening,
terrorizing fact that we do not know who we are, or where we are going in
this ocean of chaos, it has been the authorities, the political, the
religious, the educational authorities who attempted to comfort us by
giving us order, rules, regulations, informing, forming in our minds their
view of reality. To think for yourself you must question authority and
learn how to put yourself in a state of vulnerable, open-mindedness;
chaotic, confused, vulnerability to inform yourself.”
……To a persons SOUL!!!! This one statement is how I view music. “Music is the key to a persons soul!” (And yes that is a Chad Hoos ORIGINAL!!!) Why? Because I am a firm believer in that we are all a result of the music that we listen to. Now some of you may only listen to music for entertainment purposes. Some of you may only listen to music just to have some “noise” in the background.
I, on the other hand, listen to music as an extension of my personality. When I get home from a 10 hour work day I do two things…. I let my dog out and then I say, “OK Google play XXXXX on Living Room”. Every time, the choice I make for the music I want to listen to changes. However, it will always mirror the emotions I am feeling for that particular day.
Music is very important to me. On some levels I can look at my life and relive it by the music that I listen to. I can tell you exactly where I was the first time I head Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. I can tell you the first time I head Sober by Tool. I can tell you the first time I heard Patsy Cline, Walking After Midnight.
I have two favorite bands of all time and those are: 1a: PINK FLOYD 1b: TOOL
Many of you will understand and appreciate PINK FLOYD. However, most of you will not understand nor will you appreciate Tool. That is ok in my world. I get it. Many people do not take the time to listen to, interpret, or try to understand what the lyrics mean.
I listen to it all. I bury myself in all of the music. I listen to the lyrics, the guitar, the drums, the bass. I take it all in. Sometimes I get lost in all of it.
Which on some levels perhaps all of us need to take the time to “get lost in all of it.” Perhaps we all need to take the time to reconnect with music. Sure I understand we all have responsibilities. Some more than others. And for many of you there is no time to “get lost in all of it.” In the end we all should make the time. After all, TIME is all we really have.
Pink Floyd being a favorite band of mine should come with absolutely NO explanation. However, I understand when you say, “Why is TOOL one of your favorite bands?”
I could sit here and tell you all about the 12 times I went and watched TOOL live and try to explain to you the experience I had. But that would not do it any justice. What I can do is leave you with some lyrics from one of their songs:
“There was a time that the pieces fit, but I watched them fall away.
Mildewed and smoldering, strangled by our coveting
I’ve done the math enough to know the dangers of our second guessing.
Doomed to crumble unless we grow, and strengthen our communication.”
-Maynard James Keenan (TOOL)
In the end, what does it all come down to? It all comes down to COMMUNICATION!!! We are not always going to agree on everything. We are not always going to accept what some of our friends believe. Guess what??? That is fine. Just because I do not agree with your beliefs, philosophies, or ideas does not mean that I don’t respect you and your thoughts. If you want to have a discussion about them then by all means lets discuss.
For some that is where the problem is…. You want to spew your thoughts, beliefs, and philosophies but you do not want to hear anything that goes against what you think. You fail in the very thing that will help save all of us: COMMUNICATION!
“Choices always were a problem for you.
What you need is someone strong to guide you.
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow,
what you need is someone strong to guide you…..”
-Maynard James Keenan
We all have differences of opinion. We all have our own likes in music. Although we shouldn’t do it we all are guilty of it. We are all guilty of judging our neighbors, our friends, and even our family. Instead of judging or questioning someone on how they live we need to accept them for who they are. We all need to learn to love more, talk more, interact more, smile more, laugh more, and COMMUNICATE more.
Music is the key to a persons soul…………..
Until Next Time,
Spiral Out
